I absolutely love onions – could you tell?!
Onions rings were ALWAYS something I would get anytime they were on a menu.
I especially loved the dipping sauce you would get with a bloomin onion so today I’m gonna show you how to make naked onion rings AND that fabulous bloomin onion sauce!
* Naked Onion Rings *
Onions (yellow or white work best)
Fat of your choice (I like oil and butter or bacon grease)
Salt, Pepper, Paprika, Oregano
Cut off ends of onions and carefully peel off outside rings
Slice onions into 3/4 inch slices
Preheat pan to medium high heat and add fat of your choosing (if using butter, be sure to add oil as well or butter will burn)
Place onion slices flat in hot pan
Do not disturb onion slices for a few minutes to allow bottom to brown, then carefully flip over, keeping slice intact, to brown other side.
Once all onion slices have been flipped, sprinkle tops with salt, pepper, paprika and oregano
Once onions are browned on both sides and starting to soften, separate the rings and season again with salt, pepper, paprika and oregano. I like to add a bit more butter at this stage and I continue to cook until onions are caramelized but don’t let them get too soft. You want them softened but still with a bite to them (don’t be afraid to taste your food while cooking, if it needs more salt, add it!)
These are delicious with just about any sauce:
ranch, chipotle mayo, spicy mayo or even sugarfree bbq sauce or ketchup!
My favorite way to serve naked onion rings is with bloomin onion sauce, and it couldn’t be easier to make!
* Bloomin Onion Sauce *
1/2 cup mayo
2 tablespoons sugar free ketchup
2 tablespoons horseradish
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon oregano
dash black pepper
dash of cayenne pepper
Mix everything and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving
(I usually make half of this recipe)
This sauce is so full of flavor and it’s amazing served with cheesy mushroom chicken and the best damn cauli mash!
